Jesse Marco, Deejay
May 14, 2011

From Oscar parties at the Chateau Marmont to Tom Ford’s runway show during Milan fashion week, Jesse Marco is the deejay du jour to the stars, and I just heard him spin at the Dallas Contemporary. Yes, he was that good, and, by the way, only 22-years-old! I’ll be downloading his remixes in the morning. www.jessemarco.com.

Paris Potholes
April 25, 2011
Has it been that long? Sorry, I’ve been under a very big deadline for the past few days. While I catch my breath, enjoy these photos of “Project Pothole,” which I saw on one of my other favorite blogs. Artist Juliana Santacruz Herrera has been filling the potholes of Paris with these colorful braids of yarn. This may be one of my favorite art installations ever.

Dallas Clayton, Children’s Author
March 28, 2011

I overheard a friend talking about a book signing she went to recently with her 3-year-old daughter and I thought she was talking about some rock star. The author supposedly arrived an hour late (due to SXSW traffic in route to Dallas from Austin), brought a hippie entourage, did a stage dive into the audience, and after the reading took the crowd to a park across the street where he performed songs from the top of a jungle gym. Turned out the rock star author wasn’t Keith Richards, it was Dallas Clayton, children’s author, and the signing took place at chic kids’ boutique, Little Bean. I researched him and asked around, and he does seem to be overflowing with positive energy and somewhat of a rock star, so I am bummed that my daughter and I missed this event. We did however, pick up copies of both of his books at Little Bean’s shop at the Dallas flea this weekend, and they are absolutely magical and worth the hype. All kids and adults should have them. An Awesome Book (about dreaming big) and An Awesome Book of Thanks (about being thankful) are available at Little Bean in Dallas or via www.dallasclayton.com. For each book he sells, he gives one away, like Blake Mycoskie at TOMS, another one of my favorite rock stars.

Martin Creed Exhibit at Nasher Sculpture Center – Dallas
March 27, 2011
Saturday could not have been a better day here on all fronts. We spent it on various fun outings with family and good friends. And the weather was straight from southern Cal–sunny and warm in the day with sweater weather rolling in by evening. One of our first stops, thanks to the recommendation from our friend Jackie, was the Martin Creed exhibit at the Nasher. The room full of balloons was a hit with the whole family, from my little kid to my 42-year-old one. Plus, is there anywhere in town more peaceful than the outdoor grounds of the Nasher? Wolfgang Puck catering does a great lunch there at the café. Read about the exhibit here, running March 26 – June 19, 2011. (FYI: Kids under 3 aren’t allowed inside the balloon room. Not sure if they make exceptions if you hold them.)

Cat Stevens’ Majikat Album
March 25, 2011

I was 3 years old at the time, so I did not attend Cat Stevens’ Majikat tour (although that would have been awesome even at 3). But the live album from that tour is the unquestionably the most played album in our household. I can hear the particularly addictive rendition of Peace Train blaring from the other side of our house as I type. So if you are in the mood for some Cat classics, go immediately to iTunes check out the live versions on this album or watch them on YouTube. I’m betting you’ll soon be playing them a lot.
Thanks JPS for the find.

I noticed this cool blog the other day and was loving the braided hair and music festival images. Today it turns out they share one of my other loves…Isabel Marant. http://oraclefox.blogspot.com/

Scoopertino.com
March 9, 2011
So here’s how I came upon this website of hilarious, fictitious Apple news– Scoopertino. My husband and I were discussing the fact that he wears the same thing every day–his jeans and his Which Wich logo shirt. He wears this ensemble even to events that request business attire, because to my husband, that is business attire. He’s all about branding, to the point that it is part of his identity. Most people don’t have a problem with this. I’m a fashion writer and it doesn’t bother me. Seat me next to the most interesting (and nice) person in the room and they could be wearing sweats and I’d be totally cool with it. So anyway, my husband brought up the fact that Steve Jobs always wears jeans and no one has probably ever voiced a complaint about him. My first response was, “Yeah, but he’s Steve Jobs!” Then I started googling to see if I could find a picture of Jobs in something other than jeans and a black turtleneck. (Just for the record, there are images of him in a tux, but I have yet to see him in traditional business attire.) While researching, this website came up. If you are iFanatics like us, I’m betting you’ll think it’s pretty funny. Here are a few recent images…go read the original posts!

Vanishing of the Bees
January 31, 2011

Last I heard, scientists were blaming cell phone use for the mysterious disappearance of honeybees worldwide. That turned out to be false. But the story, as told in the documentary film Vanishing of the Bees, is both fascinating and alarming. Some modern farming techniques and pesticides are having catastrophic affects on mother nature, including the honey bees, who reportedly pollinate crops that make up one of out of every three bites of food on our tables. The film is an important wake-up call and a call to action to protect our honeybees, and therefore our food supply, and ultimately ourselves. This one is definitely worth your time. www.vanishingbees.com
Mix of the Month Club
January 14, 2011
How do I know DJ Lucy Wrubel’s Mix of the Month club is going to be cool? Because everything she does is cool. (If you’ve gotten one of her Christmas cards you know what I’m talking about.) I’m sure she sat at the cool kids’ table her entire life. And she still does. She’s the girl you want at your party and her mixes are what you want in your car, on your iPod, and in general for your life’s soundtrack. Now you can download a monthly mix from Lucy by signing up for a 2011 membership at www.mixofhthemonth.biz. Trust me, you’ll be groovin’ to the coolest tunes all year long.

Here’s the sample mix I just got in the mail. Think she leads a colorful life?
