Wow! Ocean! – Kids’ Book

June 6, 2011

Picture 96

Miss S has a new favorite.  Wow! Ocean! is a children’s book by Robert Neubecker with only a few words but a lot of gorgeous illustrations to teach kids about all kinds of sea life.  There’s a dog and a crab frolicking somewhere on every page, and just like with Good Night Moon, it’s a game to try to find them.  Mostly you look at the beautiful illustrations, discuss all the different types of fish and whales and coral, and make up your own story.  It’s great for 2 and 3 year olds, and may just get them to consider what is actually out there beyond the waves.

Teen and Tween Spa Treatments at The Crescent Court Hotel – Dallas

May 7, 2011

Picture 47

A friend of mine recently had a spa day with her teen daughter, which included massages (in a shared room) and then a flower petal pedicure and manicure.  This was the first I had heard of treatments geared towards tweens and teens.  What a sweet experience for mothers and daughters!  The spa at the Crescent Court Hotel has an entire menu of services for 8 to 14-year-olds.  I hope it’s still around in 6 years!

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

Just returned from a mother-daughter trip to Carmel, California and the aquarium in Monterey was pretty spectacular.  Its cool architecture and gorgeous location, right on the water, doesn’t hurt.  After checking out the exhibits we had a lovely lunch overlooking the sea.  Definitely worth a trip with the kiddos if you are on a Northern Cal getaway.

When it comes to kids’ birthday gifts, Little Bean has everything you need.  I picked up so many great things today, including these cool plate and bowl gift sets by Smiling Planet.  They come in super creative boxes ready to give–that means you ditch the wrapping paper and save trees!  The actual plates come in various peace-themed designs, are made from 100% recycled plastic, contain no toxins or BPA, and are made in the USA.  $28 per set.

Dallas Clayton, Children’s Author

I overheard a friend talking about a book signing she went to recently with her 3-year-old daughter and I thought she was talking about some rock star.  The author supposedly arrived an hour late (due to SXSW traffic in route to Dallas from Austin), brought a hippie entourage, did a stage dive into the audience, and after the reading took the crowd to a park across the street where he performed songs from the top of a jungle gym.  Turned out the rock star author wasn’t Keith Richards, it was Dallas Clayton, children’s author, and the signing took place at chic kids’ boutique, Little Bean.  I researched him and asked around, and he does seem to be overflowing with positive energy and somewhat of a rock star, so I am bummed that my daughter and I missed this event.  We did however, pick up copies of both of his books at Little Bean’s shop at the Dallas flea this weekend, and they are absolutely magical and worth the hype. All kids and adults should have them.  An Awesome Book (about dreaming big) and An Awesome Book of Thanks (about being thankful) are available at Little Bean in Dallas or via www.dallasclayton.com.  For each book he sells, he gives one away, like Blake Mycoskie at TOMS, another one of my favorite rock stars.

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

March 23, 2011

Picture 18

I know a lot of us are constantly on the hunt for cool places to vacation with kids that allows both the kids and the adults to have a good time.  For me that means a beach, a pool, and food and drink service.  Two of my good friends highly recommend staying with kids at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.  While the rooms and suites are not over the top luxurious, they are right on the beach and come with all the perks of being a member of the exclusive club.  That means you have access to the kids’ club, restaurant, tennis, swim, workout facility, playground and more.  With the beach plus all the charming beach towns and the San Diego zoo and Sea World nearby, you have the makings of a great family vacation any time of year.  www.ljbtc.com

Bonnie Basham Bracelets

March 14, 2011

The other night I saw a little flash of red peeking out from a couple of chic sleeves at a cocktail party.  On further inspection, they were the newest bracelets from designer Bonnie Basham.  I’m hoping to score my own soon.

I also think my daughter needs a few of Bonnie’s darling fabric bracelets for little girls, available at Little Bean.

The super stylish and always in the know DJ Lucy Wrubel was recapping some recent travels the other day and told me that Garage is one of the best boutiques for kids she’s seen anywhere.  Modern, rocker, and even girly clothing and accessories plus a cool candy bar.  On her most recent trip, she brought home this fiercely fashionable spiked dinosaur backpack for her daughter.   7101 East Stetson, Scottsdale, AZ (480) 556-6900
