Viceroy – Snowmass

February 7, 2011

I had enough snow last week for awhile, but for those of you looking for a ski vacation this winter (or a mountain getaway this summer) I’ve been hearing great things about the Viceroy in Snowmass, particularly for family vacations. www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com

Coral Sands – Harbour Island

February 3, 2011

At least the power is back on here, but we are still a city blanketed in ice with more snow on the way.  A beach vacation is sounding particularly good.  A friend of mine who goes to Harbour Island every year just recommended Coral Sands Hotel as a great spot for a family vacation.  While Pink Sands is the high-end resort there that you usually hear about, she says Coral Sands is just as good if you are looking for something family friendly and a little less expensive, plus it is right next store and on the same pink sands beach (which is where you’ll be all day anyway, right?)

Amangiri – Utah

December 6, 2010

As my friend Kristie wrote when she emailed me about this hotel…”when are we going?”

Amangiri, “peaceful mountain,” is located where the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meet.  The region, with deep canyons and towering plateaus, has been home for centuries to the native Navajo and Hopi tribes yet is sparsely populated and presents the dramatic landscape for which the American Southwest has become famous.

Are you planning your holiday shopping yet?  One thing that everyone needs is a great-looking classic duffel bag.  There are some gorgeous options at Moore and Giles Inc. for both genders, but I especially love the travel bag below for the men in your life.

Montage – Laguna Beach

October 9, 2010

Another hotel to fantasize about…according to a lot of my friends who are also moms to young kids, Montage is a great place for a vacation with the fam.    It also looks like an ideal venue for a destination wedding.  It is about 60 minutes from both LA and San Diego, so you get that dreamy southern California weather, plus the beach and the pool, a spa, a kids’ club, several dining options, and pretty much everything else you could need on site.   www.montagelagunabeach.com

Ten Thousand Waves – Santa Fe

I was just looking at my list of Santa Fe entries and realized I’ve forgotten to post one of my favorite places in the world–Ten Thousand Waves.  Ten Thousand Waves is a Japanese spa just a few minutes from downtown Santa Fe.  It is mostly a day spa, but it does offer a small amount of lodging for longer stays, including accommodations in a 19-foot Airstream.  The place is famous for its relaxing hot baths, both public (communal) and private, all accompanied by nearby cold plunge pools.  I highly recommend making a reservation for one of the private baths, for just yourself, you and a significant other, or a group of friends.  Each bath is different and you can view them on the website. (Warning: bathing suits are optional in all baths, so the communal baths are not for the modest!) Then enjoy the other spa treatments, specialty massages, salt glows, facials, etc.  Yes, this is another hippie hangout and that’s one reason why I love it, but it has become very popular over the years so you’ll see all types there.  I think there is something especially magical about the experience at night.  And I always like to finish my time there by relaxing with a cup of hot tea on the deck looking out at the mountains.  Check out the packages online when planning your little escape.  www.tenthousandwaves.com

Crosby Street Hotel – SoHo

September 20, 2010

I promise to post about my Ashram experience soon (I am alive, although barely), but first some more intel from the bon vivants just back from NYC:

The Crosby Street Hotel is a favorite in SoHo, a perfect spot to have champagne on the garden terrace in good weather.  And what’s better than enjoying some bubbles with good friends in the crisp fall New York air?  The Crosby also serves a lovely afternoon tea, and in general has a very cheery, British vibe (the rest of the company’s hotels are all in London).  In addition to the chic bar and hotel rooms, it also has a private screening room and a Sunday night film club open to all.  www.firmdale.com

Blackberry Farm – Smoky Mountains

While I’m in a farms-are-so-romantic state of mind, here’s a small luxury hotel that is on my must-see list.  Blackberry Farm is set on over 4,000 beautiful acres in the Smoky Mountains (the nearest airport is in Knoxville, Tennessee).  It’s known for its incredible cuisine, prepared not by one chef but by an entire culinary team: the chef, the master gardener, the baker, the cheese maker, the forger, the butcher, the chocolatier, the jam lady, etc.   Many of the ingredients are, of course, homegrown, and guests can see nature’s ecosystems at work first hand.  For action-loving clientele, activities include hiking, fly fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, tennis, skeet-shooting and more.  There’s a spa and fitness facilities.  There’s seasonal cooking classes and gardening classes, a kids’ camp, and so much more that you just have to take a look at the list of activities for yourself.  Check out the special classes and adventures on the hotel’s calendar, such as a boot camp led by one of The Ashram’s fitness instructors this November.  It also seems like the ideal place to curl up with a good book and enjoy the view.   www.blackberryfarm.com
