drybar – Dallas, Los Angeles and more…
March 6, 2011

I love my regular hairdresser, but it is hard to beat a blowout for $35. DryBar is a genius new franchise that offers blowouts (no cuts, no color) in a sleek modern studio complete with cocktails and hip music. Photo books show examples of the six styles on the menu: Straight Up – simple and straight, Manhattan – sleek and smooth, Southern Comfort – big hair with volume, Cosmopolitan – lots of loose curls, Mai Tai – messy and beachy, Shirley Temple – pre-teen blowout. You can also indulge in three extra services for an extra charge: the Uptini – an updo, a Floater – 10 minute head massage, or Dry On The Fly – an in home blowout. I had the Cosmopolitan and will definitely be back for more. The online booking is a breeze (but book early!) and you are in and out in about a half hour. One bit of advice for those with really long hair…make note of that in the comment section when you book online so they’ll add a little extra time to your appointment.
P.S. Note the brilliant chandelier. They thought of everything.

NovaLash Eyelash Extensions at Lash Studio – Dallas
March 1, 2011

Today I saw a good friend who recently had NovaLash eyelash extensions applied at Lash Studio. I could not stop staring at her! They looked amazing–glamorous without being overdone. I’m not sure I would have known they were fake if she hadn’t told me. I guess it is possible to wear fake lashes without looking like J Lo. Here’s what Lash Studio has to say about NovaLash:
NovaLash Eyelash Extensions are the newest and safest beauty trend on the market! The eyelash extensions can give any woman beautiful, long lashes that make it look like she is wearing mascara. Dubbed the healthiest lash extension system available, lashes are applied with award-winning, pharmaceutical grade adhesives and can last from up ot six to eight weeks. Novalash Eylash Extensions are also available in a wide ranging palette of colors, textures and lengths, offering each wearer lush, natural looking lashes that compliment the shape and color of every eye.
Visit www.novalash.com for more information or to find NovaLash technicians in your area. My friend’s set cost $200 and are expected to last 6-8 weeks.

New Favorites at the YSL Counter
February 24, 2011

Thanks to a concussion from a car accident and a looming magazine deadline, yesterday was the first time I had a chance to run errands in weeks. One stop was the YSL counter at Neiman’s, where I intended to stock up on their best-selling product (and what I use to attempt to cover up the dark circles under my eyes) the Touche Eclat Radiant Touch.

But the inevitable happened. A cool makeup artist named Wayland got me to sit down for 5 minutes, which turned into 40 minutes and a whole makeup session. Here’s a few new favorites…
Dessin Du Regard in #4. Translation: an eye pencil in purple of all things. I promise you would never know it is purple once it’s on. It is very subtle but makes eyes look brighter than the chocolate brown liner I’ve been wearing for years. All dark-eyed girls should try this!

Fard Lumiere Aquaresistant (Water-Resistant Eye Shadow) in #1 pink sands. It is a liquid shadow that you apply with your finger and in 20 seconds you are ready for the day. At night it works as a great base color.

And finally, Creme De Blush in #1. Also a liquid, this hue gives a natural glow.
Did I get suckered into a bunch of stuff I probably didn’t need? Maybe. Do I feel better? Absolutely. Thanks Wayland.
Black Pearl
January 12, 2011

This Chanel nail polish was one of my Christmas gifts from a friend, and I’ve since come to find out that it is probably the most sought after color of the season. (I should have assumed this much based on who gave it to me!) Black Pearl is the name, and the color is just that–a mix of silver, gray, and blue–like a Tahitian pearl. Just the right combination of glamour and cool.

The name prompted me to try it….

And the perfect color keeps me hooked. Imported Champagne by Essie.

W3LL People natural and organic make-up
December 13, 2010

Leave it to Dear, Clark hair studio to offer the coolest make-up line around. W3ll People is made from 100% natural and organic ingredients so you don’t have to worry about what enters your body by way of your skin! The founders of this Austin- based company consist of: 1) a genius make-up artist and former bigwig at NARS cosmetics, 2) a brand planner and tree hugger who keeps the brand entirely eco-friendly and 3) a cosmetic dermatologist who makes sure the products are packed with all the right ingredients. The colors are great for natural-looking beauty. I love the Nudist Supernatural Lip Shine, which gives a very subtle peachy-pink glow. You can find W3LL People at their Austin namesake store, a few select boutiques (it’s at Fred Segal…it has to be good!), and online.
Dear Clark Hair Studio and the Festive Feather “Dreads” – Dallas
November 21, 2010
Sometimes before going out on the town you need a little something extra to get the party started in your head. I’m not talking about starting the champagne at noon, although that could probably help too. I needed a little inspiration for a fall cocktail party last night, especially since I was planning on wearing a leather fringe skirt that is about 5 inches long (I bought it after my stay at the Ashram back when my legs were in top form). So I headed to my awesome hair stylist, Kimmi Peacock, at Dear Clark Hair Studio. While Kimmi was working her usual magic to my hair and adding a little braid, Holly Dear came by with some feathers. One thing led to another and they attached three perfect fall-colored feathers to my hair. That did it. I was instantly transformed into party mode and did not give another thought to the skirt, or lack thereof. It was a great night, and it all started with a few feathers. Holly says they can stay in for a long time, I can wash my hair as usual since they are real feathers. Not sure how this is going to go over during a Tread work out, but we’ll see how long I can keep them in! For your own, call Holly or Kimmi at Dear Clark (214) 397-0700.

Excuse the bags under my eyes….this is the morning after photo and it was a very late night.

Ten Thousand Waves – Santa Fe
September 30, 2010

I was just looking at my list of Santa Fe entries and realized I’ve forgotten to post one of my favorite places in the world–Ten Thousand Waves. Ten Thousand Waves is a Japanese spa just a few minutes from downtown Santa Fe. It is mostly a day spa, but it does offer a small amount of lodging for longer stays, including accommodations in a 19-foot Airstream. The place is famous for its relaxing hot baths, both public (communal) and private, all accompanied by nearby cold plunge pools. I highly recommend making a reservation for one of the private baths, for just yourself, you and a significant other, or a group of friends. Each bath is different and you can view them on the website. (Warning: bathing suits are optional in all baths, so the communal baths are not for the modest!) Then enjoy the other spa treatments, specialty massages, salt glows, facials, etc. Yes, this is another hippie hangout and that’s one reason why I love it, but it has become very popular over the years so you’ll see all types there. I think there is something especially magical about the experience at night. And I always like to finish my time there by relaxing with a cup of hot tea on the deck looking out at the mountains. Check out the packages online when planning your little escape. www.tenthousandwaves.com

Divaderme Lash Extender
September 3, 2010

This beauty product is a recommendation from a friend of mine, however, I did see the results first hand. I actually thought she was wearing fake eyelashes at the gym, which would have been a little weird, but turns out she had just applied Divaderm Lash Extender to her mascara that morning. The product itself is a mascara-like bottle full of little black lash looking particles that you apply in between coats of mascara. The particles stick to your own lashes, therefore extending them. It looked pretty amazing on my friend. And way easier than applying traditional fake lashes. Available at Facelogic in Dallas or via Amazon.
Me, J.T. Osgood, and 2011 – Dallas
August 12, 2010

More good news. I found out today that I made the cut to get my hair colored by J.T. Osgood, allegedly the best colorist in Dallas. My first appointment is in 2011. By way of background, I don’t get my hair colored. Haven’t since law school. For the past few months I have been thinking it’s about that time, and then with my more recent need for a lighter mood I decided a few lighter streaks might do the trick. Now here’s the hard part: I am a brunette in a city of blondes. I’ve asked around and no one seems to know who can be trusted with dark hair. There is a lot of bad hair color in this town, which makes the whole situation even more terrifying. So I decided to go to the best of the best (Allure among other publications has given J.T. the highest honors). The problem is, it’s almost impossible to get in to J.T. She has a three-page wait list of people hoping for cancellations. The first time I called, her people told me that it is basically a year wait to get in. Of course, once I heard this I couldn’t resist. I mean, she must be GOOD. Earlier this month Osgood-O’Neil salon had a few employees go in to work on a Monday when the salon is closed, and starting at 9:00 you could call and request to get on J.T.’s books for 2011. Appointments were awarded on a first call basis. I was on the West Coast at the time, slept through my alarm, and ended up calling at 9:20. I gave them preferred days of the week and how often I’d like to come in. They said I’d hear back soon via fax. Well, I found out today that my first appointment is Jan. 5, 2011. Of course I’ll have to report on the experience. Here’s hoping she’ll make my hair color look like this:

Tune in come January to find out.
